When you hit 40, chances are that somewhere inside of your digestive system, especially in the large intestine, little pouches grow. They are called diverticula and most people go through the rest of their days not knowing they have them. In fact, around half the population have these little pouches growing in their intestine by the time they are 50. It’s when these small, bulging pouches get inflamed or infected that the problem starts. This condition is called diverticulitis and the symptoms could be nausea, fever and abdominal pain. There could also be gas and a bloated feeling in the lower abdomen, with alternating constipation and diarrhoea. The condition is diagnosed through blood tests, a scan or a colonoscopy. Depending on the mildness and severity of the condition, anything from mild rest to antibiotics to surgery can be the treatment prescribed. While no one is exactly sure about what causes this condition, a diet that is low in fibre is said to contribute towards aggravating this condition.

Diverticulitis Remedies

The first line of treatment is usually a course of antibiotics to get rid of the infection and the inflammation. If there is an abscess that does not get better and you suffer for a long time, you might need surgery. You could also look at alternative treatment for diverticulitis and there are programmes that help you get rid of the pain very quickly. You need to address this problem soon because if you don’t, the infection could spread to other parts of the body and cause complications.

When it is a mild attack, especially of it is in the early stages, a natural remedy for diverticulitis could be just rest and a very mild and strict diet. Very often, this eases the pain and brings down the fever and you are back to normal again.

There are many remedies to help, but some sufferers report that aloe vera cures many bouts of diverticulosis. Aloe vera is natural and has many healing properties. It is widely recognised as an effective anti inflamatory for the bowel.

I recently read a wonderful review of Dr Floras colon cleanse. I've tried many different cleanses over the years and this is one of the few I would recommend, especially if you are trying to treat the symptoms of diverticulitis.

Diverticulitis Diet

If you want to prevent diverticulitis or you don’t want another attack, there are a few diet restrictions you need to follow. The first thing you need is water, plenty of it. Water flushes out the impurities from your body. Then, you need to make sure that there is a lot of fibre in your diet and you also need to exercise so you prevent constipation. This means your bowels stay clean and there are fewer chances of food accumulating in the stomach and breeding bacteria. Fresh fruits and vegetables are a good start as well as foods made with whole grain flours. When it comes to diverticulitis foods to avoid would be processed foods, foods made from white flour, meats and hard to digest foods like corn, popcorn and nuts.

You need to make a list of what to eat with diverticulitis and follow a strict eating regimen if you don’t want the problem to crop up again. All fruits and vegetables, lots of water and liquids, oats, whole wheat bread, legumes and cereals are all good for this condition. You could add a fibre supplement to this diet to make sure your digestive system keeps working well. Just a bit of care and you can prevent or handle diverticulitis very well indeed.
